‘Grounded’ Workshop during Carers Week

 In Exhibitions, Workshops

Are you an unpaid Carer for a family member or friend?

Would you like to spend 2 hours learning a fun and easy craft that may help you find some respite in the challenging world we live in as Carers?

I am the Carer for my husband, a medically retired war veteran with PTSD. I use my art to find respite from the challenges of being his Carer.

Opening this week is my solo exhibition, Grounded. This exhibition celebrates my arts practice and how I use it to help ground me in sometimes crazy world I live in.

And in the middle of my exhibition is National Carers Week.

I am passionate about sharing my art and the meditative processes of printmaking, and it is one of these processes that I want to share with other Carers … gelatin plate monoprinting. This is an easy process that anyone can do at home, on their kitchen table, with little expense and hours of delightful distraction from the sometimes challenging world we all live in.

National Carers Week 13-19 October

National Carers Week is about recognising and celebrating the outstanding contribution Australia’s 2.7 million unpaid carers make to our nation.

An annual dollar value of $60.3 billion has been applied to the invaluable contribution Carers make to the community. That’s more than $1 billion a week.

We become Carers for so many different reasons. Some by choice, others by circumstance. No matter the reason or motivation behind assuming the role as a Carer, it is essential, and I think often invisible to the broader community. National Carers Week aims to educate and raise awareness about the diversity of carers and their caring roles.

Hi Kim, I have just bought a gel press plate and when I apply paint it crackles. I have tried 3 different acrylic paints and watch many YouTube videos and it does happen to them.

    Regards David

Hi David, wihtout seeing a photo, I’m guessing the ‘crackle’ effect is where the plate is resisting the paint. This can happen on homemade and commerical plates and will generally stop after a few prints. Its as if the first few prints ‘season; the plate. I personally love this effect and get really excited when it happens – because I don’t see it very often. Sometimes specific brands of paint will crackle/resist more than others too. What paint are you using? And how many prints have you pulled from the plate where it keeps happening? A few or lots and lots?
