Artist books are one of my most favourite forms of artistic expression. What is an Artist Book? It is a medium of creative expression that uses to the form and function of a book as its inspiration … but the interpretation of ‘book’ is wide and varied.
Once you have worked on a few of the basic artist book forms and structures, the possibilities of where you can take this artform is endless!
In this workshop we will explore several different basic book forms using folding methods, tape and glue to bind the structures. We will look at and discuss more complex constructions, and you will leave this workshop with skills to continue creating your own artist books in varied levels of complexity from home.
This workshop is suitable for beginners to intermediate, all ages over 16.
Scroll down, or click here, to read what past students have said about this workshop.
You will be able to take these skills home and continue to confidently make your own artist books from your own studio or home.
We will cover designing and planning your artist book; different paper, cover and book materials; and work with several different folding structures. Many book structures can be made with just the simple art of folding paper. Add glue or tape and possibilites and structural complexity increase.
You will be given handouts with basic book structural instructions and information to help you research further the wonderful art of artist book making.
All necessary materials for making our artist books are covered in your Materials Fee and provided for this workshop.
– plenty of plain and coloured papers in a range of sizes
– board for covers
– glue and tapes
– different tools and resources used for book making
– tea and plunger coffee, with a light morning and afternoon tea
Everything you need for this workshop is included and provided.
Lunch. You can pop into town to buy lunch, but it is a few minutes drive and parking can be difficult (Maleny is a popular weekend destination). Therefore I recommend you bring your lunch and maximise the time you have printing and learning in the studio.
Bring your own printed, painted or favourite papers if you have some; papers with drawings, paintings, gel plate monotype prints, cyanotype. I will have plenty of paper on hand, but if you have some of your own papers that you would like to work with, please bring them with you. We will work with different paper sizes for different book structures; bring what you think you may like to work with and we’ll see how everything fits together on the day.
Please also bring a journal or notebook for taking notes during the workshop. And you are welcome to take photos of demonstrations and examples on the day.
Participants are advised to wear closed in shoes, and suitable clothing or apron that you do not mind ‘studio’ dirty.
We will be using sharp tools to cut and work with our papers. You will be given instruction on how to hold and use the tools, and it will expected that you follow instruction and take care while using them.
