An artist book can be intimate and personal; it can be a one-of-a-kind or form a small edition; it can be sculptural and robust, inviting touch and exploration; it can be delicate and fragile; it can be pretty and interesting and serve no functional purpose; it can hold pictures or secrets, or tell a tall tale … no matter how you want to refer to them, they are an exciting form of personal expression – and can be created by anyone.
This workshop looks at two different book stitching/binding techniques to bind books:
- One very simple stitching technique – Pamphlet Stitch.
- The other a little more complex, but easy to work with once you have been shown – Coptic Binding.
This workshop is suitable for beginners to intermediate, all ages over 16.
We will focus on 2 book binding/stitching techniques that can be used individually and combined to create handmade and artist books in varying formats and combinations.
Day 1 will show you how to work with the pamphlet stitch, and the exciting possibilities this simple stitch can create. Then you will learn how to bind a small book with paired needle Coptic binding (also known as double-needle Coptic binding).
Day 2 will be about making your own book using one or both of the stitching techniques we learned in Day 1. You will make a book, or two, to your own size (within any paper size limitations) and I will help you through the process as needed.
You will take home the books you make. You will be given handouts for the stitching we cover over the weekend so you can confidently continue to make stitched books from your own studio or home. Plus you will leave with a list of suppliers for where you can buy your own tools and materials.
All of the necessary materials for making our books are covered in your Materials Fee and provided for this workshop.
Materials included are, but not limited to:
– plenty of plain and simple coloured papers in a range of sizes (and you are welcome to bring some of your own papers to make your own unique books)
– needles and linen thread
– tools and resources used for book making
– a selection of decorative papers and washi tape to embellish your artist books
– tea and coffee, with a light morning and afternoon tea
Everything else you need for this workshop is included and provided.
Binding/sewing needles.
You are welcome to bring your own printed, painted or favourite papers – papers with drawings, paintings, gel plate monotype prints, cyanotype. I will have plenty of plain and simple coloured papers on hand, but if you have some of your own papers that you would like to work with, please bring them with you. You may want to use these papers for the book covers we make.
Lunch. You can pop into town to buy lunch, but it is a few minutes drive and parking can be difficult (Maleny is a popular weekend destination). Therefore I recommend you bring your lunch and maximise the time you have printing and learning in the studio.
Please also bring a journal or notebook for taking notes during the workshop. And you are welcome to take photos of demonstrations and examples on the day.
Participants are advised to wear closed in shoes, and suitable clothing or apron that you do not mind ‘studio’ dirty.
We will be using sharp tools to cut and work with our papers. You will be given instruction on how to hold and use the tools, and it will expected that you follow instruction and take care while using them.
To book your place in this workshop, please complete the booking form to the right.
Full payment is required to secure your booking. Payment can be made via PayPal or direct deposit.
If you cancel your workshop booking you may incur fees. Please read my cancellation policy here.
If a workshop does not reach the minimum numbers required, it may have to be cancelled. If this happens you will receive a full refund or an option to reschedule.
Once your booking form and payment has been received I will contact you to confirm you place and advise any special instructions.

It opened up my eyes to the world of stitched bookbinding. Kim made the workshop so interesting and well structured and shared so much about the processes and especially the resources and where to buy many of them. The homemade baked goods were a delicious bonus! Even for a complete beginner like myself, who is used to woodworking tools, I came away with an enthusiasm to keep going with stitched bookbinding and to master the needle! The course handouts were very detailed, a lot of work put in by Kim and there were almost limitless resources to make four or five stitched books and especially the coptic binding book. It really was a great workshop and big thank you to Kim for her relaxed and fun, yet informative teaching of the stitching methods.

Excellent workshop. Well organised, explanations, demonstrations clear and I got lots of assistance when needed. Kim's generosity with materials is amazing and so appreciated.

Kim's classes are so well organised and presented that it's a pleasure to spend a weekend in her spacious studio with like minded enthusiasts. We had access to a wide range of papers from which to choose our covers and papers, along with written handouts to take home for our own use. All of the generous variety of materials needed were included in the tuition fee. Following on from demonstrations and practising some basic stitches we were free to choose projects and work at our own pace. The hardest part was deciding what to do when there were so many beautiful book samples on display.

I love how you share personal bits and pieces which encourages others to share as well. After two days in a small group workshop with you, I feel like I have made new friends [What did you like about the workshop] the relaxed atmosphere. the random tangents we talked about - where to buy things, people's backgrounds, what people are doing with their artwork, books related to the workshop or not etc.. the amount of physical objects (books) relating to the workshop in all sorts of creative ways, giving so many ideas - not pictures but we could physically handle them. that everything was included in the price.

Thanks for organising this private workshop for three of us. It was practical and we came away with 2 books. You are a patient, generous and inspiring teacher. Great resources and handouts. We have already bought one of the books and ordered thread and tools. Cant wait to get back to NZ and start making books. Oh and thanks for the cake.
