After Dark – preparing for a new printmaking exhibition

 In Exhibitions, Maleny Printmakers, Printmaking

What happens in the rainforest once the sun has set? The night shift kicks in to gear at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve with bioluminescent fungi, inquisitive marsupials, owls, moths and flying-foxes. And these are just some of the interesting ‘night shift’ plants and animals that inhabit the rainforest at night.

Visit the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve to find out as the Maleny Printmakers share their own interpretations of the park ‘after dark’.

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a living museum of plant and animal life. Spreading across 55 hectare, the Reserve is subtropical rainforest and remnant of the rainforests that once covered the Blackall Range. It boasts an award winning interactive Discovery Centre with spectacular views of the iconic (and my favourite) Glass House Mountains.

Throughout the year, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve themes their Rainforest Discovery Centre to share and educate the public about this significant and very special location. Their current theme is ‘After Dark’, aiming to inform and educate visitors about the seldom-seen abundant and dynamic ecosystem that comes to life as the night shift kicks into gear.

Maleny Printmakers Exhibition – Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

The Maleny Printmakers have been given a very special opportunity to present an ‘After Dark’ themed exhibition in their theatrette this September. We will explore (in print of course!) the secretive night-time antics and shenanigans of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. With 8 to 10 printmaking artists contributing work to this group exhibition, covering a broad range of print media, it will be an exhibition to delight the senses.

I am planning 4 prints. You can see the teaser photos of one of them above. It is still very much in progress, with 5 colours down and another 3 or 4 to go. Can you see what it is yet? I’ll be sharing more progress photos of work in progress in my Instagram and Facebook accounts, if you’re interested in following.

So save the date and plan a visit to the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Stay a while … enjoy a coffee and lunch overlooking to Glass House Mountains. If it’s a clear day you’ll be able to see all the way down to Brisbane. Enjoy the fine art printmaking exhibition and then take a walk through the Reserve. Day or night, this rainforest park is a very special treasure beautifully maintained for the public to experience and enjoy. And don’t forget to look around the Discovery Centre … enjoy interactive displays and dioramas giving you an up-close-and-personal experience with the rainforest, beyond the protective boardwalks and forest paths.

The exhibition opens – Saturday 01 September
Closes – Sunday 16 September

Where – Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Mountain View Road, Maleny

Opening event 3pm Friday 31 August

10 September 2018 UPDATE: I managed to produce 3 reduction linocut prints. I’m happy with what I printed, just a little disappointed I didn’t get my 4th print done. Oh well. We’re halfway through the exhibition. Its well worth a visit – 26 fabulous original handprinted fine art prints.
