GEL PLATE PRINTING BOOKS

Gelli Arts Printing Guide by Susanne McNeill is an updated reprint of an older book. It is the one that has some of my work in its Gallery section.
It is available from many online stores – in hardcopy and ebook format.

This is the book I showed you written by one of the ‘inventors’of the commercial gel plate – Gelli Plate Printing by Joan Bess
It is available from many online stores – in hardcopy and ebook format.

You can find a lot of this information from a range of sources online, but if you like referencing books, this one is pretty good. It shows a lot of approaches that are very different to what we did in our workshop, giving a broader view of the process. The options are almost limitless as to how you can approach this process.

The other book I had on hand using home made plates was Making Monotypes Using a Gelatin Plate by Nancy Marculewicz.

BUYING GELLI PLATES

Craft Online and theartshopcom.au – the best prices I have found for gel plates:

Thread Studio (great for stencils as well as gel plates) – www.thethreadstudio.com

Officeworks have recently started selling gel plates. I’m not sure if you can buy instore or only online – www.officeworks.com.au

Eckersleys – www.eckersleys.com.au/gel-press-mono-printing-plates

I have seen a Speedball brand at Spotlight but have heard mixed results about them. They are similar in price, and I can’t say one way or another if they are better, same or worse than Gelli brand gel plates

PAINT

I buy from here – https://www.thesydneyartstore.com.au/product-group/580-golden-open-acrylics-59ml/category/103-acrylic-painting

And here – https://theartshop.com.au/golden-open-acrylics-59ml

This is a great starter set – https://www.thesydneyartstore.com.au/product-group/2550-golden-open-acrylic-traditional-set/category/103-acrylic-painting

Oxlades (Brisbane and Noosa) and Alice West in Buderim also sell them.

You can buy Golden paints from (links at the bottom of the page):

  • Oxlades – Brisbane and Noosa
  • The Art Shed – Brisbane
  • Alice West – Buderim
  • The Art Shop – online only

The cheap paint I suggested to use with kids is Mont Marte SATIN acrylic. There is also a SILVER, but it is faster drying than the SATIN. Mont Marte also has an extender medium that you can add to their paints to slow down their drying time.

You can click here to read an email I sent my online gel plate monoprinting students. It talks about my favourite colours for this process. I do go through stages where some are more favourite than others, but this list is still pretty true for my overall favourites.

PAPER

The paper we used in our workshop was:

  • Normal 80gsm bond photocopy paper
  • 125gsm or 135gsm acid free cartridge paper
  • Hosho paper approx 100gsm
  • 145gsm Hereford Book and Printmaking paper
  • Canson Montval watercolour paper
  • Tracing paper
  • Tissue paper

Below are links to a new series of articles talking about paper. Beautiful, delicious, multi-purpose paper, with a focus on Printmaking paper:

BRAYERS aka ROLLERS

These are the rollers we used – mes.net.au/collections/brayers-rollers/products/blue-handle-soft-rollers?variant=41165003161732

If you are wanting a roller just for gel plate printing, a cheaper roller will be just fine. Craft Online has a good selection, and this one looks very similar to the ones we used in the workshop.

This is the blue handled brayer we used, from Officeworks. I think you can only buy it online. It is a good price.

RESOURCES IN MY BLOG

You can find more information in my blog, including the gel plate recipe and some of the intentional sequences were worked through during the workshop:

WANT TO DO THIS ALL OVER AGAIN and again and again and … ?

I have taken this workshop online – the first of a series of online workshops I am creating.

Everything we covered in our in-person workshop is covered in the online workshop, plus a bit more – so you can refer back to it when ever you want or need to, in your own space and time. There is over 2 hours of video content, made up of 30+ short videos.

Access to the online workshop is normally $97, being granted for the lifetime of the course. For students who have already attended this workshop in-person, access is $47.

Click here for full details about the online course or fill in the enrolment form at the bottom of this page and I will email your portal login details.

GEL PLATE PRINTING ON POTTERY

You can gel plate monoprint on to just about any surface! Here are some pottery printing resources:

GEL PLATE PRINTING ON TEXTILES

Again – you can gel plate monoprint on to just about any surface! Here are some textile printing resources I’ve recently come across:

MONOPRINT VS MONOTYPE

Gel plate printing is a form on ‘monoprinting’. We printed ‘monotype’ prints during the workshop. I have written a blog article aboutthe difference between ‘monotype’ and ‘monoprint’. Click here it you’re keen to find out.

PANELS/BOARDS

These are the boards I buy to mount my gel prints from The Sydney Art Store. Most art stores sell boards that you can use.

I use the Matisse Mid-viscosity binder medium to stick the paper to the board. I like to use the satin varnish.

Then Micador ‘For Artists’ spray varnish to seal the work.

Below is a series of videos from my new online workshop that demonstrate my process for mounting my work.

This link will download a pdf with the full list of materials and overview of the steps I take to mount my papers to board.

LETS GO SHOPPING 🙂
