Who can resist a handmade box? Not me!

Handmade boxes and paper enclosures are a fabulous way to add a personal and bespoke touch to your art or craft project. They can be as simple or as complex as your feel inclined to make.

This is a new workshop added for 2022.

Using paper, board and prints we make a collection of unique boxes and enclosures. You will leave with what you make, plus handouts to keep making at home.

Each box template that you will learn can be adapted and modified to different sizes and structural variations to make them your own.

This workshop is suitable for beginners to intermediate, all ages over 16.

Learning Outcome

I make my own boxes to hold Artist Books and collected treasures. Once you have an understanding of some basic structural considerations, you can adapt and modify templates to your own unique requirements.

Handmade boxes and enclosures are also a fabulous way to use your not-so-perfect prints.

In this workshop we will make several simple box/enclosure structures working with paper and light card. We will also make a ‘chocolate box’ with board, that we cover with a decorative paper. The ‘chocolate box’ template can be adapted and modified to suit different shapes and sizes, like my the box I made to keep my Home artist book.

We’ll be making 4-5 boxes/enclosures (you will take them home with you). Each structure has its own template handout for you to keep for future reference.

Inclusions

All necessary materials for making our boxes are covered in your Materials Fee and provided for this workshop. This includes but is not limited to:

– papers and board (and you are welcome to bring some of your own papers to make your own unique boxes)
– glue and tapes
– tools and resources used for box making
– a selection of decorative papers and washi tape to embellish your boxes
– tea and coffee, with a light morning and afternoon tea

Not Included

Everything you need for this workshop is included and provided.

What to Bring

You are welcome to bring your own printed, painted or favourite papers – papers with drawings, paintings, gel plate monotype prints, cyanotype. I will have plenty of plain and simple coloured papers on hand, but if you have some of your own papers that you would like to work with, please bring them with you. We will work with different paper sizes for different box structures; bring what you think you may like to work with and we’ll see how everything fits together on the day.

Lunch. You can pop into town to buy lunch, but it is a few minutes drive and parking can be difficult (Maleny is a popular weekend destination). Therefore I recommend you bring your lunch and maximise the time you have printing and learning in the studio.

Please also bring a journal or notebook for taking notes during the workshop. And you are welcome to take photos of demonstrations and examples on the day.

Safety

Participants are advised to wear closed in shoes, and suitable clothing or apron that you do not mind ‘studio’ dirty.

We will be using sharp tools to cut and work with our papers. You will be given instruction on how to hold and use the tools, and it will expected that you follow instruction and take care while using them.

Booking/Payment

To book your place in this workshop, please complete the booking form to the right.

Full payment is required to secure your booking. Payment can be made via PayPal or direct deposit.

If you cancel your workshop booking you may incur fees. Please read my cancellation policy here.

If a workshop does not reach the minimum numbers required, it may have to be cancelled. If this happens you will receive a full refund or an option to reschedule.

Once your booking form and payment has been received I will contact you to confirm you place and advise any special instructions.

Workshops and Students’ work

This is a new workshop added to the program for 2022. This workshop ran in 2021 as a Private Tuition workshop.

Handmade Box and Enclosures

Below are examples of boxes and enclosures I have made. The structures are simple – but the possibilities of how you can adapt and personalise them are enormous.

Handmade 'Chocolate' box

Holiday 'Pocket Finds' Box

Matchbox and Origami Boxes

Cyanotype 'Chocolate Box' (modifed commercial box)

About Dates and other options

If the dates noted above don’t suit you, or you would like private tuition or to arrange a private group workshop, please contact me to enquire about other date options that better suit you.

You can also sign up to my mailing list to be kept up to date about upcoming workshops dates and opportunities, plus tips, hints and ideas for your own printmaking practice. I will also include information about other local artist workshops in the Maleny Sunshine Coast Hinterland area.

  • I was very excited when Kim introduced the Treasure Boxes workshop as I had done almost every other workshop offered. I loved this weekend workshop. Such a well planned, interesting and informative course. It has presented me with so many new uses for the many and varied prints I have created in and following the other workshops. Kim is such a patient, knowledgeable and generous teacher. She has a real gift, not only as an artist, but in the unique way she unselfishly imparts and shares her vast experience, research and talent.

  • Kim's special attention to the details and de-mystifying the complexities surrounding precision and construction of a whole range of special treasure boxes for all purposes. And we were able to complete and take home a wonderful example of those teachings. Great fun and Kim is a truly gifted and generous teacher and I am looking forward to being involved with many more of Kim's workshops
