This workshop is open ONLY to students who have attended a Metal Plate Etching workshop with me in the past.
This workshop is about providing you with an opportunity to further develop and explore the metal plate etching process in my studio with tutored guidance throughout the weekend.
It is a continuation from the 2 day workshop you have previously attended, working with aluminium metal plates and etching with the copper sulphate and salt solution; then printing your plates onto printmaking paper.
By ‘continuation’ I mean you will have the time and resources to etch then print your image without the pressure of fitting in new learnings and printings in the initial weekend format. You can simply repeat what you learnt, or further experiment with the process, including different inking techniques and chine-collé.
We’ll have a quick refresher about the process to get started, then you have the whole weekend to etch and print plates with your own image ideas.
I will be on hand to discuss your approach, troubleshoot and guide you through printing your etched plates.
You will:
- Be given two aluminium plates to work with;
- Be emailed the plate size options 1-2 weeks before the workshop weekend;
- Be given 2 sheets of printmaking paper in full-sheet size, to tear or cut to the size you wish to print your plate;
- Have time to explore different inking approaches; and
- Be shown how to incorporate chine-collé when printing your plates.
You will leave the workshop with your etched aluminium plates and prints.
Everything you need for this workshop is provided, including, but not limited to;
– two aluminium plates for etching – plates sizes will be provided closer to the workshop date to give you time to plan the images you wish the etch and print. They will be similar to the plates used during your workshop, purchased from my plumbing supplier, so some plates will have scratches.
– grounds and other materials to prepare your plate for etching
– inks and other studio materials and resources to print your etched plates
– quality printmaking papers to print your etchings, including proofing papers
– tea and coffee, with a light morning and afternoon tea
Everything you need for this workshop is included and provided.
IMAGE IDEAS. You will need to bring your ideas of the image you wish to etch then print. You can bring a basic idea or resolved image – but the aim of this weekend is for you to created etched plates with your own images. If you get stuck you are welcome to look through my reference books and work out your image idea when you get here.
PLATES & PRINTS from your initial workshop weekend. You can print the plates again and further etch them if you want to. We can look at your prints as a starting point to kickoff the weekend.
YOUR OWN TOOLS & MATERIALS. You are welcome to bring your own tools and materials (etching tools, papers, grounds) to the workshop. You can save $25 off the workshop fee if you bring your own printmaking papers for the weekend – bringing the weekend fee to $335.00.
LUNCH. You can pop into town to buy lunch, but it is a few minutes drive and parking can be difficult (Maleny is a popular weekend destination). Therefore I recommend you bring your lunch and maximise the time you have printing and learning in the studio.
Please also bring a studio apron and journal or notebook for taking notes during the workshop.
Participants are advised to wear closed in shoes, and suitable clothing or apron that you do not mind getting dirty or stained.
We may be handling copper sulphate on the day, and gloves will be available for when removing the aluminium plates from the etching bath. It is expected that you will follow safety instruction and take care when working with chemicals.
The dry chemical we use is copper sulphate – just like what you buy from the hardware store for your garden.
To book your place in this workshop, please complete the booking form to the right.
Full payment is required to secure your booking. Payment can be made via PayPal or direct deposit.
If you cancel your workshop booking you may incur fees. Please read my cancellation policy here.
If a workshop does not reach the minimum numbers required, it may have to be cancelled. If this happens you will receive a full refund or an option to reschedule.
Once your booking form and payment has been received I will contact you to confirm you place and advise any special instructions.

I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend workshop and Kim was very encouraging and explained the process well. Kim’s enthusiasm about printing was infectious. Thank you for a great weekend.

This was the best art workshop I’ve ever attended. Kim was incredibly patient, skilled, and created such a supportive and relaxed environment that made learning a real joy. I came away not only with several beautiful prints but also with a strong sense of accomplishment. I would highly recommend this workshop to anyone looking to explore their creative side —especially if you’ve never tried etching before.

Kim is an excellent teacher- she's passionate about the printmaking process and has an incredible wealth of knowledge which is generously shared. The etching workshop was thoughtfully prepared and planned sequentially. Foundational skills were presented on the first day which built confidence and understanding followed by a deeper depth of process during the second day that built on everyone's developing skills . At no point was Kim unengaged with participants, she was sensitively aware of each persons grasp of the procedures and process and was available and happy to support at every stage. I was blown away by the endless possibilities and application that this technique opens up for me. I was inspired, delighted, motivated and intrigued- it's a total package.......I simply can't wait to experiment and play some more with printmaking- Thanks Kim

Kim’s passion and expertise was very evident throughout the workshop and her ability to manage the diverse needs of the group. Kim has a refreshing balance of being super creative but also practical to work at a good pace to teach the complex processes of print making. She also makes you feel like you are already part of a printmaking community and on a printmaking journey even if you are just a novice!

Kim's workshops are always professional organised and run. There is no element of "I wonder what we're doing" - with everything from notes, paper, tools and usually a lovely printed card all laid out ready and waiting for your arrival. Processes are well explained, often demonstrated with Kim's enthusiasm for the subject matter absolutely contagious. I defy you to attend any of Kim's amazing workshops and not thoroughly enjoy yourself and come away with an appreciation of both her and her work.

Every aspect was mentored by Kim, and she was highly enthusiastic. She anticipated what our next step would be as if we were the only at the workshop. I can not think of any point where I was left wondering of what my next step would be!

[What did you like about the workshop] The pace was great and excellent use of space to make it easy and accessible. Resources and extra reading useful. Loved the demonstrations and ability to ask you any questions and get help one-on-one if necessary. It gave me more food for thought and another process to include in my own art practice. Sometimes new ideas are waking me up at night!!!

Kim, it is a huge privilege to visit you in your gorgeous studio and learn from you. I have been fortunate to have enjoyed several sessions with you now... and I have loved every single one of them. It has been wonderful learning new skills and approaches as well as meeting lovely like-minded folks who are also enthusiastic to learn. It feels like 'coming home' to arrive at your studio all ready to be enthralled and launched into a new skill/direction. What did I like about this workshop? - fabulous instructor (generous, enthusiastic, authentic, well-informed, pragmatic, and supportive... with frequent reminders of strategies to ensure physical and psychological well being) - welcoming spacious and totally inspiring studio space in great setting - small group of like-minded folks who were enthusiastic to learn/share, - fellow students a wonderful mix of experienced and emerging artists as well as folks who are just really interested in art and making... and all are made to feel welcomed and valued - fabulous notes (fulsome information re. process, where to acquire etching materials, and where to find examples of work created by practising artists) - great pace and length of teaching/working sessions - awesome tasty and healthy treats - quotations wall in toilet

I love how you break down what initially seems like a complex process into very clear and simple steps so that it becomes very achievable. I also love that with my baby press, and some simple supplies I can explore the world of etching - which I always thought would be too hard. I feel so confident using my press now - and really appreciate that you will help us source smaller quantities of materials so we can experiment further without a huge investment of money. It's great to share the creativity of the other students in each group = learning about their art journey and finding out out what inspires them and ignites their passions. Viva la print making!
