Create Beautiful Eco-printed Silk Scarves

Explore the beautiful art of eco-printing on silk, perfect for creating thoughtful, handmade gifts for yourself or someone special.

Over the course of the day, we will print three silk scarves using natural botanicals, learning techniques to capture the intricate shapes and colours of leaves on delicate fabric.

This workshop is suitable for beginners (all ages over 16) and anyone with a passion for eco-printing.

Whether you’re creating gifts or treating yourself, you’ll enjoy this hands-on, creative experience!

Learning Outcome

Eco-printing uses natural plant materials to transfer colour and shapes directly onto textile and/or paper fibres. In this workshop, you will learn the art of eco-printing on silk and leave with four printed silk scarves, perfect for gifts or personal use.

We will explore:

  • Different techniques for bundling and wrapping silk.
  • Printing with and without the use of natural dyes.
  • How to use blankets, modifiers and additives to influence your prints.

By the end of the workshop, you will have the knowledge and confidence to continue eco-printing on silk from home. You’ll also receive handouts detailing the steps, plus additional resources to guide you in further exploration.

During the workshop, we’ll cover:

  • Preparation of silk for eco-printing.
  • Selection and preparation of plant materials that work best with silk.
  • How to achieve results at home without needing specialised equipment.
  • The language and key concepts used in eco-printing.
  • Tips on sourcing materials and supplies, and recommendations for further reading and learning.

Important Note: Eco-printing is a process driven by nature’s unpredictability. If you’re seeking a workshop focused on achieving highly controlled results, this will not be the best fit. However, if you enjoy the organic and unpredictable beauty of the process, you’ll leave inspired to experiment further at home.

You’ll also receive a detailed handout with information on where to purchase supplies, recommended reading, and other eco-print artists to explore.

Inclusions

All necessary materials for this workshop are covered in your Materials Fee.

– 3x silk scarves for eco-printing
– botanical materials for our eco-printing
– mordants and dyes required for this process
– equipment for boiling
– tea and coffee, with a light morning and afternoon tea

Not Included

Everything you need for this workshop is included and provided.

What to Bring

Something to take your wet scarves home – the silk can dry fast, but your scarves will need to be rinsed when you get home, to remove any residue left on them from the eco-printing process. An old towel will be good to bundle your silks to take home.

Lunch. You can pop into town to buy lunch, but it is a few minutes drive and parking can be difficult (Maleny is a popular weekend destination). Therefore I recommend you bring your lunch and maximise the time you have printing and learning in the studio.

Bring a journal or notebook for taking notes during the workshop.

Safety

Participants are advised to wear closed in shoes, and suitable clothing or apron that you do not mind getting dirty.

We will be working with natural, non-toxic materials on the day. Gloves will be provided to be used when we unwrap our eco-printed papers at the end of the workshop.

Booking/Payment

To book your place in this workshop, please complete the booking form to the right.

Full payment is required to secure your booking. Payment can be made via PayPal or direct deposit.

If you cancel your workshop booking you may incur fees. Please read my cancellation policy here.

If a workshop does not reach the minimum numbers required, it may have to be cancelled. If this happens you will receive a full refund or an option to reschedule.

Once your booking form and payment has been received I will contact you to confirm you place and advise any special instructions.

What is eco-printing on silk?

Eco-printing is a natural printing technique that captures the beauty of botanicals – leaves, bark, flowers and other plant materials – by transferring their colours, shapes and details directly onto textiles, such as silk. Unlike eco-printing on paper, printing on silk allows for a different texture and vibrancy, producing soft, wearable art pieces like scarves. The process involves carefully bundling the botanical elements onto the silk, using heat to extract pigments and achieving unique patterns that reflect the natural world.

Eco-printing on silk offers endless creative possibilities. While the technique shares some similarities with eco-printing on paper, silk’s delicate fibres absorb botanical impressions easily, making it an exciting and organic process where no two pieces are alike.

Why Learn Eco-Printing on Silk From Me?

I am a passionate printmaker with years of experience in exploring and teaching various printmaking techniques, including eco-printing on silk and paper. As an artist who loves experimenting with both natural elements and fibre, I find eco-printing to be a perfect fusion of art and nature.

Though I am not a botanist, my love for working with native plants and my commitment to learning about their characteristics have driven my eco-printing experience. I am constantly experimenting with leaves, bark and flowers to see how their natural pigments interact with silk.

As a printmaker and teacher, I believe in the value of process. I’ve eco-printed countless silk scarves and pieces of paper, refining my method over time. Through this workshop, I aim to share my process, tips and insights, giving you the tools to confidently create your own eco-printed silk pieces at home.

Whether you’re a beginner looking to explore the beauty of natural printing or someone who’s dabbled in eco-printing on paper, this silk-focused workshop will open up new creative possibilities. You’ll leave with practical knowledge, beautifully printed scarves, and the confidence to continue your eco-printing journey.

How Eco-Printing on Silk Differs from Paper

While both eco-printing on silk and paper rely on natural plant materials, the two processes yield distinct results due to the different fibres and absorption qualities of the materials. Silk, being a protein-based fibre, interacts with plant pigments in a unique way, allowing for softer blends and more fluid impressions. If you’re curious about eco-printing on paper, you can learn more about that process in our Eco-Printing on Paper workshop here.

  • So exciting to do eco-dying on silk again. The results and vibrant colours achieved by all participants produced much excitement and satisfaction. With Kim’s vast experience and superb guidance, she encouraged us to push the boundaries as she steered us in the right direction to hopefully achieve our desired outcome. We all left with smiling faces and gratitude, for the 4 amazing silk scarves we had each produced. The excitement continued on arriving home to rinse and iron the scarves, discovering the incredible botanical details that had imprinted on the silk, together with the vibrant colours. What a lovely way to spend a day. Thank you so very much Kim.

  • This was my 4th work shop with Kim and I will be back for more. I have enjoyed every workshop, but the Eco printing work shop I have enjoyed the most. I loved the results we all got and was amazed by the colours we achieved. I am already looking forward to the follow up work shop on this technique. Kim her workshops are always the right balance between information and play. There is room for lots of questions and experimenting. The location is beautiful and the people attending are always lovely.
