The approach we take in this workshop can create quick results, while also allowing for careful consideration and play.
You will make your own collagraph plates and cutouts. We will explore a few different approaches to making then inking and printing them, combining both intaglio and relief printing with a contemporary twist.
They way we approach making our plates will make for fast plate preparation and printing. This will allow for experimentation and exploration of “what if I …” questions that will come up during our weekend.
This workshop is suitable for beginners-intermediate printmakers, all ages over 16. Some printmaking experience will be helpful, but not essential.
This workshop will reply on using an etching press to print our plates. However, we will explore hand-printing alternatives so you get a feel for what can be achieved with either printing method.
Day 1 will focus on exploring the process and making simple collagraph plates and cutouts. We will print the plates, building up in technique throughout the day.
Day 2 will focus on further experimentation with the process and creating some finished pieces. You may want to continue working with the plates you made on Day 1, or you =may want to create new plates.
You will leave the workshop with your printed papers, the collagraph and cutout plates you create, and information to keep developing your new-found skills.
All necessary materials for this workshop are covered in your Materials Fee, including;
– all tools and resources needed to make our collagraph plates and cutouts
– printmaking papers and inks
– some pre-prepared collagraph plates and cutouts to print from my own collection to get you started
– tea and coffee, with a light morning and afternoon tea
Everything you need for this workshop is included and provided.
You are welcome to bring your own etching, drypoint and/or linocut plates to work with over the weekend. If you have paper stencils that you would like to work with (and don’t mind getting inky), bring them along too.
You will receive an email 1-2 weeks before the workshop date with suggestions and guidelines for these items, but they are not essential as there will be plenty resources on hand and you will be making your own during the workshop.
LUNCH. You can pop into town to buy lunch, but it is a few minutes drive and parking can be difficult (Maleny is a popular weekend destination). Therefore I recommend you bring your lunch and maximise the time you have printing and learning in the studio.
Please also bring a studio apron and journal or notebook for taking notes during the workshop.
Participants are advised to wear closed in shoes, and suitable clothing or apron that you do not mind getting dirty or stained.
We will be using sharp tools during this workshop. You will be given instruction on how to use the tools, and it will expected that you follow instruction and take care while using them.
To book your place in this workshop, please complete the booking form to the right.
Full payment is required to secure your booking. Payment can be made via PayPal or direct deposit.
If you cancel your workshop booking you may incur fees. Please read my cancellation policy here.
If a workshop does not reach the minimum numbers required, it may have to be cancelled. If this happens you will receive a full refund or an option to reschedule.
Once your booking form and payment has been received I will contact you to confirm you place and advise any special instructions.
Below are prints created with collagraph plates and cutouts along the lines of what we will learn in our workshop. There are so many options with this process, so while I have shown my examples below, please don’t let them limit your thinking of what is possible.
This first series shows a collagraph plate then two prints taken from the same plate, adding cutouts when printing each.
Below are detail photographs of 2x triptych monoprints. Both using the same collagraph plates but with different inking approaches during the same printing session.
And finally some trusty magpies – printed with individual magpie utouts and layered when printing.

I've just completed the collagraph workshop with Kim - and friends. It was relaxed and enjoyable but so informative. Kim is such a good teacher and information sharer. Possibilities for my printmaking are now exciting and endless. Thank you Kim.

Such an enjoyable workshop thank you Kim. It has opened my eyes to a whole new world of printmaking. Can’t wait to experiment more.

It was one of the most fun filled workshops I have ever attended. I found it so refreshing. You were there for everyone with a smile and so generous in sharing your knowledge. I am not sure how you can improve on something that has a pretty high bar as it is! I have attended two other workshops on Collagraphs. One online with Sally Hirst and one with Kay Watanabe in Brisbane. I came away from your workshop full of fresh ideas. I appreciated the time you spent talking to me taking. chances and experimenting. I needed to hear that. The workshop was fun and so inspiring! You are an excellent teacher. So organized.

Another fun time at a Kim H workshop. I came out of Collagraphs & Cutout with A massive reigniting of enthusiasm and inspiration for this printmaking form. Very happy with what I created over the two days with Kim’s e pert advice and encouragement. So, so motivated as a result. Thank you once again Kim!

I have come away inspired with new ideas for my printmaking, as well as consolidating what I've learnt over the two days. Thank you Kim. The time frame over two days was excellent. It enabled us to create our collagraph prints without the pressure of a time limit. Kim, you are an exceptional teacher, always ready to help and encourage our individual styles. Your feedback is always positive and you are incredibly generous with your notes and resources. In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger - "I'll be back"!

Kim is an amazing teacher. Encouraged me to just keep trying. This is my 4th workshop in her fabulous studio. Already looking forward to the next one.

I love the way that all your workshops are run efficiently with everything well set up. You are incredibly generous with both resources and time spent with each of us. It was inspiring to see everyone's work whether it was just through play, proofing or the finished product.

Loved spending the first day of this highly recommended course learning techniques and letting my imagination run free, experimenting with printed textures and impressions. This prepared me well for the second day, where I focused on using these skills to build and create my own original project. Loved every minute of this particular weekend. Could easily spend another day absorbing the knowledge and skills from Kim. Wonderful atmosphere and a great way to meet new people and just unwind.
-
I really enjoyed the workshop as we were able to create some lovely work and varied during the two days. I was surprised with the results of the cut outs method as it seems so simple but is so effective. And the collograph method enabled such complex images with interesting textures and tones.
