Platycerium superbum, frond
Staghorn fern
Detail becomes landscape.
A fallen staghorn frond reveals a structure difficult to see when the plant grows high on a tree. Its branching veins remain after the softer material has broken down.
Removed from its familiar context, the frond begins to look like a map or landscape. I was drawn to that shift in scale and perception.
Looking closely revealed patterns I might otherwise have missed, and traces of a life that was once part of the larger forest.
