This workshop is about revisiting the cyanotype process and working beyond the basics of solid blue and white prints.
Bleach and tone cyanotype prints. Push the boundaries of photograms and wet cyanotype contact prints. Play and explore. Prior cyanotype experience essential.
I will share with you how I achieve my wet cyanotype results. We’ll explore bleaching and toning cyanotype prints and other ways you can push the boundaries of this sun-magic process.
Workshops and Students’ work
Prior experience creating blue and white cyanotype prints is essential for this workshop.
We will hit the ground running and create a long exposure at the very start of the workshop. Then, after a quick refresher about the process, we’ll discuss the opportunities and possibilities for the day.
There will be some pre-coated papers to get started, then you will be coating your own papers throughout the day.
I will share with you how I achieve the intense blue/rust results that I love to create, as well as ways of incorporating colour and mixed layered results in to your cyanotype prints.
We will bleach and tone old prints, maybe even applying another exposure layer. There are so many possibilities when you’re given some new ideas to push the blue and white boundaries.
You will be given handouts with material recommendations so you can continue at home, including where to buy the appropriate materials and chemicals.
All necessary materials for this workshop are covered in your Materials Fee.
– printmaking papers and cyanotype chemicals
– brushes, images and stencils and objects to create your sun-printed designs
– tea and coffee, with a light morning and afternoon tea
Cyanotype prints. Bring prints you have previously created. We’ll use these to explore bleaching and toning prints.
Image making objects. We will use found objects, and I will have many objects and stencils for you to work with, but if you anything in particular that you want to work with, please bring them along.
Sunscreen and a hat – we will be spending some time in the sun, but there is shade on the verandah and prep work will be done in the studio.
A lightproof bag – it is possible that you may have a few sheets of pre-prepared paper left over after the workshop. You are welcome to take any unused paper in your kits home – but you will need a lightproof bag to put it into. In the past I have made my own bags using black ‘builders plastic’ that I bought from Bunnings.
Patience and a sense of wonder – there is an element of waiting as we watch our cyanotype prints develop in the sun; followed by wonder as we watch the magic of a process developed way back in 1842 create our blue sun prints.
Lunch. You can pop into town to buy lunch, but it is a few minutes drive and parking can be difficult (Maleny is a popular weekend destination). Therefore I recommend you bring your lunch and maximise the time you have printing and learning in the studio.
Bring a journal or notebook for taking notes during the workshop.
We will be using the UV (ultra violet) light c/o the sun as our exposure source. Bright sunny days and light or intermittent cloud cover are perfect conditions.
However, you can make cyanotype prints in almost any weather – cloud cover and rain just make for longer exposure times. Partly cloudy days are totally workable.
In the event that it ends up being a heavy rain day we may need to reschedule the workshop for another weekend. If it comes to that you will also be given the option of a refund.
Participants are advised to wear closed in shoes, and suitable clothing or apron that you do not mind getting dirty or stained.
We won’t be handling dry chemicals on the day. The cyanotype solutions will be pre-prepared, and gloves will be available for when handling the paper and coating your own paper.
The chemicals we use are Ammonium ferric citrate (green), a yellow-green powder with a faint Ammonia-like odour. It is used in medicine and photography; and Potassium ferricyanide which has low toxicity, its main hazard being that it is a mild irritant to the eyes and skin.

Kim Herringe has the best workshops. The techniques you learn are great and there is lots of room to experiment and find you own style. The groups are small so lots of opportunities to discuss issues with Kim. She has good handouts and she gives you a link to these on the internet as well. She also does a beautiful cake for morning tea and her studio is very inspiring as well. I can highly recommend her workshops.

This was my first in person workshop at the Studio. Everything was very well organised and welcoming. The handouts, instructions, equipment, and setting were all excellent. Kim has an uncanny ability to jump around and answer each students questions as they are relevant to that student in that moment. Kim is always enthusiastic and nothing seems to faze her, there is always a work around. Kim also knows her subjects inside out.

If you want to experiment with cyanotype beyond the basics, I highly recommend Kim's extension class. The day was full of new ideas and ways to adjust an image and extend our understanding of how it can be worked on again. I loved the 'I wonder what would happen if..." approach to altering part or all of the existing image using simple products found in the home. The exciting part is understanding that an image can be changed, adjusted and totally redone so easily.

I learned a lot more about cyanotype and will be able to do very different works now. it was such a relaxed and fun day .... rain and shine ... and i loved seeing the variety of works which we produced. Kim is a very generous and knowledgeable tutor and I always enjoy her workshops.
