Podocarpus elatus
Plum pine
Deep time grows here.
Plum pine belongs to the podocarps, a conifer lineage with a long fossil history. Its presence in the forest connects that history with the life growing around us today.
Here, a wet cyanotype of plum pine leaves sits over a botanical monotype of bracken. Leaves placed directly against sensitised paper leave traces shaped by sunlight, moisture and chemistry.
Their contact with the paper connects the scale of deep time with something close at hand: a leaf from a tree growing in the forest today.
