Pararistolochia praevenosa
Richmond birdwing vine
The future of a butterfly begins with a leaf.
Richmond birdwing butterflies lay their eggs on this vine. Its leaves feed the caterpillars, supporting the next generation.
I had long known of the Richmond birdwing, so recognised the vine’s importance when I saw it. The vine shape is laser-cut from a wet cyanotype made with birdwing vine. Behind it, are embossed Richmond birdwing butterflies and vine leaf skeletons, giving form to a relationship mostly out of sight.
Once plentiful across the region, Richmond birdwing butterflies have declined as rainforest habitat has been lost and fragmented.. The vine holds the possibility of their return.
