Making Room
The forest’s return began with making room.
Rainforest once covered this land.
Logging and clearing followed. The land became grazing pasture, then lantana spread across the open ground.
This book brings before and after together in two parts that share a back cover and open in opposite directions. Turning from one to the other moves between the work of clearing lantana and the forest growing in the space it opened.
The earlier photographs record the clearing, one chapter in a longer history. The newer images show old trees, new growth and relationships gathering again.
I wanted to acknowledge the landowners’ sustained work and care, and the life that endured and responded. The returning forest carries evidence of both: human effort making room and plants, birds and insects continuing the work of renewal.
