GET READY…

This week is all about you taking the time to develop and create your artwork. This focus is on printmaking and bookmaking techniques taught at The Studio. Use this time to refine your skills and immerse yourself in 4 and a half days of quality creative time just for you.

SAFETY

The Studio is a fully functional professional space.

Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothing or an apron you don’t mind getting dirty—printmaking can be messy.

Whenever possible, we use non-toxic inks, chemicals and materials. However, printmaking involves various materials and processes, including sharp tools and substances with some toxicity.

You will receive instructions and guidance on using tools and maintaining studio safety. It is essential to follow these instructions carefully.

MATERIALS, RESOURCES AND WHAT TO BRING

The workshop fee includes a levy to cover some, but not all, MATERIALS. I have uploaded a Materials List and Price List for items available for purchase at The Studio.

  • Materials List – what’s included and what you need to bring
  • Price list (prices are subject to change if supplier prices increase. Pricing is current as of November 2025.)

You will have access to the following RESOURCES:

  • Printing presses: Pauline, the large etching press, and Paulette, the new smaller A4+ etching press (a little larger than the X-cut Express printer).
  • Studio library: A collection of books and resources covering a wide range of printmaking and art-related topics.
  • Studio work areas: Well-equipped spaces tailored for various printmaking techniques. With only 4 people in the group, you will have ample working space to spread out for the week.

Below are art supply stores that sell printmaking supplies if you need to buy anything before or during your time at The Studio. If you are traveling to Maleny for the Summer Impressions week and relying on buying supplies at any of these stores when you get here, it would be a good idea to double-check that they have what you want. If in doubt, let me know.

  • Eckersley’s, Minyama – approx 50min drive from The Studio
  • Alice West, Buderim – approx 40min drive from The Studio
  • James Frames, Maleny – approx 5min drive from The Studio
  • The Art Shed, Brisbane – approx 1.5hrs drive from The Studio
  • Oxlades, Brisbane – approx 1.5hrs drive from The Studio
  • Oxlades, Noosa – approx 1hr drive from The Studio

If you want to buy supplies online and have them delivered directly to The Studio, no problem, just let me know beforehand. Below are the online suppliers I buy from:

If you have problems getting hold of anything or are not sure what to bring or buy from where, please let me know.

PAPER

If you have questions about paper, let me know, and/or have a read of the blog articles below. Part 2 covers papers used in workshops and papers I like to use for specific printing purposes.

EXTRA PROCESSES

In addition to your primary projects, you can explore a couple of extra processes during the week. As a group, we will choose two activities (or similar) to explore on different afternoons. Listed below are the options, with some photo examples below that:

  • Letterpress printing – Print text and numbers onto plain paper and pre-printed papers. These papers can be used for mixed media, collage, bookmarking and printing over. I will have cartridge paper on hand to print but bring your own paper, too. We will be using the ‘proofing press’ with random selections of wood type.
  • Paper rusting – We’ll dip papers (into a series of dip-baths to create rusted effects. I will have some plain papers, but bring any unprinted and printed papers – etching, lino, monoprinting, drawings.
  • Indigo dyeing – Dip paper into the indigo vat and enjoy the beautiful blues!

Paper rusting and Indigo will be set up for Wednesday morning, and available then for the rest of the week. You can play with these processes at any stage these days.

We’ll plan a time for letterpress monoprinting, as a group, on Monday afternoon.

If you’d prefer to continue focusing on your primary work, that’s fine too.

IMAGES AND IDEAS

It is expected that you will have your own image and/or project ideas. Bring them with you and/or look through any of my resource library books for inspiration when you’re here.

I’ll be checking in with everyone later in the year about planning for the week so everyone gets the most out of their week.

Below are links to workshop galleries showing work created by students in past workshops:

Below are links to my Pinterest boards covering different processeds. If you’re a bit stuck for ideas, have a look through them and spend a few hours tumbling down the Pinterest rabbit hole.

LUNCH & SNACKS

Lunch is provided from Tuesday to Friday. Throughout the week, there will be a selection of sandwiches, salads and fresh bread.

Tea, coffee and light gluten-free morning and afternoon tea are available Tuesday to Friday, with afternoon tea on Monday. I promise it won’t be orange cake every day 🙂

Feel free to bring your food and drinks if you prefer. The studio has a small kitchenette with a fridge, cutlery, and a microwave oven.
