Whether you’re picking up a pencil for the first time or looking to sharpen your skills, this course is designed to give you the core techniques to draw anything – from everyday objects to imagined scenes.
Through a mix of structured lessons and hands-on exercises, you’ll learn to see like an artist, break down complex subjects into simple shapes, master shading and perspective and more.
The focus is on building skills you can use to draw anything with confidence.
This Drawing workshop is for beginner to intermediate artists and creatives of all backgrounds who want a solid foundation in drawing principles that apply to any subject. All ages over 16.
By the end of the workshop, you will have a toolkit of essential drawing techniques to build your confidence and expand your creative skills. You will:
- Learn contour, gesture and proportion techniques
- Dive into 1- and 2-point perspective
- Explore shading, light, and form
- Wrap up with a guided drawing session
Optional Day 2: Application & Expansion
For those keen to continue, an optional second day will be offered to deepen your learning and apply the techniques from Day 1. The focus will be on extended drawing exercises, working from life and imagination, as well as dedicated time for personal projects. You’ll also receive one-on-one feedback and tailored guidance from David to support your individual progress.
Running the second day will depend on interest. If you’re keen for more drawing time and individualised feedback, please let me know!

Lunch. You can pop into town to buy lunch, but it is a few minutes drive and parking can be difficult (Maleny is a popular weekend destination). Therefore I recommend you bring your lunch and maximise your time at the studio.
This workshop is structured so that students bring their own drawing materials, as listed in the “What to Bring” tab. All items are easily found at local art supply stores. Bringing your own kit is encouraged so you can continue your drawing practice after the workshop.
However, if you have difficulty sourcing materials, the following will be available for use at the studio:
- Unprinted newsprint sheets
- Drawing charcoal
- Drawing pencils
- Woodless pencils
- Blending stumps
- Still life objects
