Get Ready for your
Reduction Linocut Workshop

YOUR WORKSHOP DATE
Saturday-Sunday 11-12 November

TIME – 9:45am for a 10am start
Finishing around 4pm

LOCATION
This workshop is held my own private studio at:
10 Nadi Lane, North Maleny
5 minutes drive from the Maleny township. Scroll down the page to see the Google map.

PARKING
You can park in the carport (in front of the studio), and there is parking for 3-4 cars in the parking bay next to the driveway. If you are first in, please park snugly into the front of the parking bay (closest to the road). It will be easier for you to pull in there than for the 3rd or 4th car to pull in there. If the carport and parking bays are full you can park in the driveway – we’ll just park each other in. There is street parking on the grass at the street.

ON ARRIVAL
Once parked, head through the carport and in to the studio. I’ll be in there pottering around getting ready for our workshop.

Please take a moment to read through the information on this page. It contains important information about your upcoming workshop.

If, after reading the information below, you still have questions before our time together, please call 0413 384 426 or email me.

GET READY…

Get ready to create layered, colour linocut prints!

This two day workshop will discuss different ways of applying colour to your lino prints, with the main focus being (hands on with) the reduction linocut technique.

You will learn about preparing your image and block, carving, registration and printing in a small edition.

We will cover a lot of ground, so it is assumed that you have some knowledge of the linoprinting process and image carving.

I will share tips and explain the process; and detail the range of tools and equipment, across a range of budgets, that you can buy and source yourself to keep you printing at home.

You will leave the workshop with an edition of your own reduction linocut prints, your lino plate and registration jig.

SAFETY

We will be working with sharp, good quality carving tools. I will provide demonstration and instruction on how to use these tools safely.

We will be printing with water-based printmaking inks. No solvent clean up, just fresh water. But ink on clothes will stain.

Please wear closed, comfortable shoes and comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting ink on. Bring a studio apron if you have one. If you don’t have an apron, I have a few spare in the studio.

!! IMAGES & DESIGN IDEAS – IMPORTANT !!

You will be working with a lino block approx 14cm x 20cm.

If you have an image or design in mind, bring a drawing or printout of it along on the day at the size you would like to print, keeping the size of your design within 14cm x 20cm.

Please keep your design simple.

If this is your first attempt at reduction linocut, you are more likely to finish a simpler image. Once you have an understanding of the process – then you can start to design and print more complex images.

Think about the colour breakdown of your image BEFORE the workshop:

  • Ask yourself “how could I reproduce you image using only a 3-4 colours?”
  • Create some coloured pencil versions of your image using just those colours, and we can talk it through the day.
  • Aim for 3 colours. A 4th colour can be achievable depending on the complexity of the design, and we can discuss that on the Saturday.

Here are some tips and comments about bringing your own design to the workshop:

  • Carving is the most time consuming part of the process, so the simpler the image is to carve, the more likely you will be to finish your print over the weekend
  • Scroll to the end of this page to see examples of student’s work carved and printed during this workshop
  • Carving thin lines, outlines and fine detail requires skill and time – keep detail to a minimum
  • Depending where you get to by the end of day 1, you can take your lino block and tools home to continue carving on Saturday evening
  • When I learn a new process I prefer to copy an image. That way I can focus on the process and not worry about the image itself. I have a lot of reference images that you can copy. Copying something for your own purposes is ok.

You are welcome to email me with your ideas before the workshop and we can talk through how appropriate the image is (regarding complexity).

But fear not if you are stuck for inspiration as I will have plenty of suitable images and ideas on hand for you to use and reference.

Scroll down the page to see examples of past student’s workshop prints. You will get a sense of the level of detail that has been achieved during this workshop.

WHATS INCLUDED

All the materials you need for this workshop are included in the Materials Fee you paid when you booked your workshop.

Your Materials Fee covers the use of quality carving tools, rollers, papers, inks, other creative resources, reference materials, material sourcing, and studio equipment for this workshop.

You will be given a lino plate (approx 14cm x 20cm) to carve and print, and we will be printing onto printmaking paper. You will also make your own registration jig which you’ll be able to take home to keep using, and use as reference for making future jigs.

You will leave the workshop with an edition of your own reduction linocut prints, your lino plate and registration jig.

Click here if you would like to read more about your Materials Fee.

WHAT TO BRING

If you have your own lino tools, you are more than welcome to bring them to use during the workshop.

In addition to lunch and design ideas, please bring a pen and journal or notebook for taking notes during the workshop.

You are welcome to take photos of my demonstrations and the processes we cover, so you can refer back to these in the future.

LUNCH & SNACKS

A light morning and afternoon tea is provided for this workshop. As is tea and coffee throughout the day.

Please bring your own lunch. You can drive into town to buy something, but parking can be difficult on weekends. There are places to buy lunch in town on your way in to the workshop.

The studio has a fridge, microwave and cutlery.

ARRIVE TIME

For each workshop I ask students to aim for 9:45 arrival so we can kick off at 10am sharp.

If you’re running late or get a little lost, please don’t stress, and please don’t rush to make up time. Drive safe! If you can give me a call on 0413 384 426 to let me know that would be great, and I’ll catch you up on anything you may have missed.

The studio is open from 9:30am each workshop morning. You are more than welcome to arrive earlier than 9:45. I know that its tricky to predict travel times when you’re coming from the Gold Coast or Brisbane. There is a comfy area to sit with a cuppa and browse books and magazines while I finish getting the studio ready for our workshop.

Examples of past student’s work

I’ve added some photos of student’s work below to give you an idea of the sort of images and level of complexity can work to. Some prints are design and ideas of students, and others from reference images I have provided. By all means bring your own image or design, but know that I will have plenty of reference on hand. You can see more student linocut prints here.
