GET READY…
Get ready to explore the beautiful complex-yet-simple process of reduction linocut!
Over two full days, we’ll dive into different ways to add colour to your prints – with the main focus on the reduction linocut technique. You’ll learn how to plan your image, prepare your block, carve, register and print in a small edition.
Throughout the weekend, I’ll share practical tips and walk you through the tools and materials I use, including budget-friendly options, so you can continue printing confidently from home.
You’ll leave with your own printed edition, your lino plate, and a registration jig to keep experimenting with this process long after the workshop ends.
SAFETY
We will be working with good-quality carving tools. I will provide demonstration and instruction on the use of these tools safely, and it will expected that you follow instruction and take care while using them.
We will be printing with water-based printmaking inks. No chemical cleanup, just fresh water. But ink on clothes will stain.
Please wear closed, comfortable shoes and comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting ink on. Bring a studio apron if you have one.
!! IMAGES & DESIGN IDEAS – IMPORTANT !!
You’ll be working with a lino block approx 14cm x 20cm. You’re welcome to trim it smaller if you’d prefer.
If you have a design in mind, bring a drawing or printout at the actual size you want to print (within the 14cm x 20cm block). Please keep your design simple. If you’re unsure, bring a few options and we’ll discuss them together.
If this is your first time doing reduction linocut, you may have more success with a simpler image. Once you understand the process, you can move on to more complex designs.
Not sure what image to use or bring?? Don’t worry. I’ll have plenty of images and reference materials on hand that you’re welcome to copy or adapt.
Tips for Preparing Your Design
- Think ahead about colour – try breaking your image down into 3 or 4 colours. A coloured pencil sketch can help you visualise the layers.
- Aim for 3 colours. A 4th may be possible depending on your design – we can chat about that on Saturday.
- Simple is best: Carving takes time, and thin lines or fine detail can be fiddly and slow. The more straightforward your design, the more likely you’ll finish your print over the weekend.
- Scroll to the bottom of this page to see prints from past students and get a feel for what’s achievable.
If you’re unsure about your design, you’re welcome to email me beforehand and I’ll help assess whether it’s a good fit for the workshop.
When I’m learning a new process, I like to copy a reference image so I can focus on understanding the technique rather than getting too focused on the image. You’re welcome to do the same – I’ll have a large collection you can choose from.
If needed, you can take your block and tools home to continue carving on Saturday night.
WHATS INCLUDED
All the materials you need for this workshop are included in the Materials Fee you paid when you booked your workshop.
Your Materials Fee covers the use of quality carving tools, rollers, papers, inks, other creative resources, reference materials, material sourcing, and studio equipment for this workshop.
You will be given a lino plate (approx 14cm x 20cm) to carve and print, and we will be printing onto a range of printmaking and drawing papers.
You will leave the workshop with a collection of your own hand-printed linocut prints and your carved lino plate to keep printing.
WHAT TO BRING
Please bring your own lunch.
Please bring a pen and journal or notebook for taking notes during the workshop. You are also welcome to bring your own linocut tools, if you have them.
You are welcome to take photos of my demonstrations and the processes we cover, so you can refer back to these in the future.
LUNCH & SNACKS
Morning and afternoon tea: A light morning and afternoon tea (gluten-free) is provided during this workshop. As is tea and coffee throughout the day.
Lunch: Please bring your own. You can also pop into town to grab something, though parking can be difficult on weekends. There’s a fridge, microwave, and cutlery in the studio if you need them.
Examples of past student’s work
I’ve added some photos of student’s work below to give you an idea of the sort of images and level of complexity can work to. Some prints are design and ideas of students, and others from reference images I have provided. By all means bring your own image or design, but know that I will have plenty of reference on hand. You can see more student linocut prints here.
