BUILDING NARRATIVE AND MAKING MEANING IN ARTISTS’ BOOKS

Stories and storytelling are fundamental to humanity. They help us make meaning of our world; they connect us; and they entertain us.

Artists’ books offer a unique medium through which to tell stories. They invite readers to slow down and are often navigated in an intimate, tactile and interactive manner.

This workshop is a special opportunity to explore narrative and meaning in artists’ books with Fiona Dempster, a nationally and internationally respected book artist who calls the Sunshine Coast Hinterland home.

Fiona’s work is held in public collections in the USA, Australia, the UK, and Iraq, and features in 500 Handmade Books 2 Vol. 2. Her blog has been archived by the National Library of Australia and she regularly participates in exhibitions and presents at conferences. Fiona holds a National Diploma in calligraphy from CLAS in the UK.

Suitable for artists seeking to take their artists’ books deeper and further.

Learning Outcome

In this workshop you will discover how in an artists’ book, narrative is not simply conveyed through words or imagery, but also through the physicality of the book itself. It can be established in a variety of ways and we will explore these various dimensions.

So often, when we make a book ourselves, we are thrilled that we have made the container – and pay less attention to what is contained.  This workshop will focus on building narrative in book-making, encouraging you to find ways to use the book form to tell a story – be it short and sweet, simple or complex, political or fairytale.

After investigating how different makers create successful and meaningful artists’ books, you will be guided through some frameworks for consideration and decision-making as you develop your own narrative through an artists’ book.

About Fiona Dempster

Fiona Dempster

Fiona is a maker with words – an artists’ book maker, a calligraphic artist, a stitcher of words, and a traditional letterpress printmaker. Words are the way she makes her way through the world, and text is nearly always present in her work.

Her finished work has a calm and gentle order, and holds a quiet stillness, as she strives to make issues that can be complex and challenging, appear simple and elegant.

Slow making is at the heart of her practice and all of her work takes time. Time to stitch, time to prepare calligraphy, time to bind books, time to set type, and time to ponder…
