Jewels of the Forest

Vivid green staghorns adorn the red cedar’s branches like jewels. Their beauty took me by surprise.

The drone photographs revealed them from above, looking down into the canopy—a view we can’t experience from the ground.

The three hanging banners show slightly shifted views of the same tree. Each rotates the view and draws further back, revealing more branches and more staghorns.

Jewels of the Forest - suspended scroll hanging artist book

Each staghorn holds a small ecosystem, distinct yet connected through the tree and surrounding forest. The cedar provides a
place to grow above the forest floor. The ferns anchor themselves to its bark, gathering water and fallen organic matter.

I suspended the book on the wall to give these images a physical presence and invite the same surprise and awe I felt when I first saw them.
