Student Eco-printing On Silk Resources

STUDENT RESOURCES

This page shares information to extend on what we covered during our workshop.

I buy most of my art supplies online, from several different sources depending on who is having a sale, and what I need in my order. I look for overall value in the pricing of the item, delivery cost and quality of service when ordering.

I encourage you to shop around for different pricing and the possibility of online sales from other retailers.

Please let me know if you source from a different supplier so I can share it with other students.

Wow what a day! This webpage shares information to support what we covered during our workshop. During our workshop we worked through the basics of the process, in various combinations. There is so much more to discover and explore. Fire up the burner, fill the pot with water, bundle your silks and eco-print away 🙂

Now it is your turn to print, play and explore:

  • Repeat the same steps at home that we have covered in the workshop, with your own plants and papers, and see how the results compare.

  • Read and research online to find out how other people take different approaches – and combine your learnings.

If you have experienced other eco-printers, books, reference links and learning resources that you think will be of interest, please share! Email me so I can add them to this page.

Care instructions

You will need to rinse your scarf when you get home. You can do it straight away, or well after it has dried.

  • Rinse under tap water to remove and metal residue and plant debris.
  • Iron to remove wrinkles. Some wrinkles are permanent as the fibres have been bent.
  • In a small bucket with fresh water add a tablespoon of vinegar and dip your scarf.
This will refresh the luster in the silk.
  • Let dry and wear with pride!

I hand-wash my silks with a small amount of shampoo as needed.

Buying Silks

I buy my silks from Kraftkolour. These are the Habotai silks we printed with – kraftkolour.net.au/collections/habotai-silk-scarves

Other Australian silk scarf retailers are:

You can also buy on Etsy and Amazon. Dharma Trading in the US is another option. Compare pricing and exchange rate as the freight is very expensive.

Buying Dyes and Modifiers

I buy my dyes and mordants from Kraftkolour.

The dyes we used are natural dyes from both suppliers. Please note that ‘natural’ does not automatically mean ‘non-toxic’ or environmentally sustainable or responsible. The dyes we use are, but I encourage you to conduct your own research on this topic when purchasing natural dyes.

I buy iron sulphate and copper sulphate, used as modifiers in our workshop, from the hardware store.

ORANGE CAKE RECIPE

This is the recipe I use for the cake I made for our workshop. I make a few variations – swapping oranges for lemons or mandarins, and sometimes adding dark chocolate pieces. YUM.

I have created a private Facebook group ONLY for people who have attended my workshops. The idea is you can ask me questions, we share work, and I’ll share resources and information. Click the button below to join the conversation  …
